My first video game. Thank you, and happy birthday SNES!

Yoshi is still boring, the controls slippery, power-ups too all-or-nothing, visuals rounded and dull, themes altogether slack. The focus on secret exits should thrill me, but it’s all so bland.

I came to see if Mario World had changed for me in 23 years, no longer caught between SMB3’s precision theatrics and Mario 64’s astonishing dimensional breakthrough. But no, that Super Nintendo sequel spirit – extension, refinement, acceptance – it still haunts every jump.

Every year we get more polished sequels. Every year they are praised, loved. And every year I long for transgression, revolution, something strange and raw and radically new.

SMB3 was more revolutionary, but SMW brought so much polish and more to the established Mario formula I love it slightly more. I played both to completion on release, so I have proper perspective.

If SMW is a 10, then SMB3 is a 9.99.

The level design doesn't suffer from this in SMB3.

The levels are very short, and often don't have enough lanes open for you to get off the ground flying. And when it is used, it has things designed for it.

SMW is where they screwed the pooch in terms of difficulty balancing with flying power ups. Now levels are longer, wider, emptier, and allows continous flying if you get the rhythm down right, at the cost of practically nothing with rarely anything getting in the way. It honestly makes me wonder why they even invented such a dumb power up that makes everything a breeze. I feel like they did just include this for casuals to fly over levels they couldn't beat, or now they're too lazy to engage with any one level and just skips it entirely.

picrelated. it's not "garbage" by any measure, it's still a great game, but I went from thinking this was literally THE greatest game of all time to just a good game with many flaws, that somehow loses in many ways to SMB3 that it's supposed to be a sequel to.
>just 2 powerups, one is useless and the other is clearly OP
>yoshi barely adds much to the gameplay
>clearly broken blue yoshi
>spin jump clearly better than regular
>no map items
>graphics resemble GIMP
>level design feels somewhat bland at times
>lost opportunity to make a real collectathon with dragon coins
I could go on and on. I still like the game, but as I get older, I look less and less positively at it.

What's the big deal with this game? I grew up with Sega and played this earlier last year, and frankly, it's another diamond dozen platformer

When a good portion of the posters at the RETRO board are younger than THIS, you KNOW it's 'bout time to settle down and make some kids of your own..

I've gotten really into this game lately. I've beaten it normally a few times, and now I'm trying out some rom hacks.

This Hack Needs A Name is one I've been enjoying a lot. It's on the easier side, but some of the assets and ideas are really nice. What other hacks would you recommend?

Do you guys consider Mario World to be a classicvania or a semi-metroidvania?

I don't really 'get' this game. Never played as a child, mind you, but i had some fun with the classic Mario Bros 1 (Deluxe version for the game boy color). In some ways, i see this game as less "pure" than the first mario. The game feature good additions but distorts the original philosophy of the game with yoshi, the cape, the "exploration" (having to replay certain areas of the map to get the full experience).

What did purists had to say about the game when it was released? Was this the Breath of the wild of the mario franchise?

Why does nothing come out of the red and blue blocks? They could have easily been fire flowers and stars, respectively.

Because Yoshi giving Mario that lustful smirk isn't implicitly sexual at all.

Are there any hacks for the SNES version of Super Mario World that add the features from Super Mario Advance 2?
