>Start of the game is a cyberpunk story about the resistance to the Shinra company
>After Midgar it turns into standard Final Fantasy Fare, and could fit any Final fantasy game and mostly ignores the cyberpunk stetting
>The story of Seph + Jenova + Meteor could be transported to FF5 with no problems
>Shinra falls by the wayside
>Shinra is irrelevant in the sequels

FFVII starts out as a fascinating comment on an important issue (take your pick: globalisation, environmentalism, self-esteem) but ends up with a run-of-the-mill insane fantasy villain (Sephiroth), whereas FFIX is the opposite by starting out with a run-of-the-mill insane fantasy villain (Queen Brahne) but ends up with a fascinating comment on an important issue (accepting mortality and enjoying your time on this earth).

The "learn Japanese" meme is BS. Most of the retro Japanese games were improved and made more interesting with their American localizations.

Was this game an anti American allegory, and green movement propaganda?

What are some good JRPG's for PC?

The best "retro" JRPG? That's a tough pick as the best should be great in all aspects. Xenogears has a very ambitious story and Lunar has funny, warm writing, but their battles are boring and their character development shallow. Valkyrie Profile has a fantastic combo-based battle system and Star Ocean 2 has incredible character development, but their stories and writing need work.

No, it has to be great in all regards, which is why I pick the most mainstream pick of all: Final Fantasy 7. The story is expertly paced and always interesting; the writing sounds natural (with the odd bit of engrish here and there); the characters are unforgettable; there is tons of exploration and side content; the battles are typical fast-paced FF fare; the character growth (materia system) is highly customizable; and its graphics and atmosphere are incredible and puts it over the top. It's truly the GOAT.

True disappointment and another example of Saturnfags overrating their games. (Would people namedrop Three Dirty Dwarves and Clockwork Knight if they were PS1 exclusives?) That battle system is a complete joke: it's literally fly around the enemy and find the weak point, over and over, with the occasional "puzzle" to solve to find that weak point. And as far as character growth is concerned, well, there is none. What really made me turn the game off for good was when it started spewing political/philosophic rhetoric directly at me.

The thing that annoyed me most about VS is the fact that you can't quickly switch between weapons of your own choosing. That would've been much more useful than quick-selecting chain combos etc., considering how often you need to change them.

>Also, SMT is absolute shit from a gameplay perspective and I wish people would stop pretending it's not.
Absolutely. SMT didn't start gitting gud until after the "retro" era. That said, Nocturne and Strange Journey are two of the best JRPG's.

What do you consider to be the definitive way to play this game?

Also FF7 thread.

Hey, /vr/. After reading the blog about how crash bandicoot came to be on the playStation, particularly the technical challenges with the ps1, I'm now interested if there are other articles like it. I heard there's a bunch of stuff on the GDC vault, but unfortunately most of it isn't free. So I was wondering if there are other text based stuff like this which details the postmortems of facing both technical and game design challenges for some famous games. Final Fantasy 7 would be a nice thing to read about if it's available. Or is the Ultmania the only source?
