The ridiculous manoeuvres are in fact a huge part of the appeal, it's completely fair while being hard. The stars are completely devoid of any randomness, they literally only do what you do the inputs for.

In fact the game is almost pretty much RNG free outside of the bomb drops that the ball launchers occasionally poop out. Even things like drops from normal enemies are based on the score you have while playing so you can adjust it by jumping on more or less enemies or even your own star as it gives you 10 score per landing and you get items based on the double digits in the score (i.e. 330 as the last three digits of your score guarantees you the fireball power up, 440 a bomb etc.).

I can only speak for myself but the reason I love the game is that it’s as technical as you want to get with it, especially if you enjoy speedrunning games or just feeling like you’ve mastered them.
