They played it safe with 2016. They didn't want to do too much and trying the bare minimum to give it a plot. The amount of lore given was just enough to keep you intrigued on the world.

Eternal lore is just this bloated mess trying to appease the lore crowd.

Doing a soft reboot for Quake would be the absolute best choice,go for familiarity try to do go for the same tone as the original.
Quake Champions maps were close to it,so they have already a strong base.

There was a particular level where you had to get through the whole casino to the boss office and than he ran away. You chase him back to the entrance trying to kill him and he was tough, cause you could headshot him 5 times and he was still running.
