It's a written expression mainly used by magazines and people on internets in late 90s/early 2000s. Because people are lazy fucks typing Playstation (which was what every referred it in person) is obviously too much work so everyone used the PSX acronym instead. To give a modern 4chan example of this in 2009 people actually typed the phases "my face when" for a while but after a while started to >mfw instead

Also I'm 35 and I have never, ever heard anyone saying NES in person but it was simply "the Nintendo" before SNES came out and "regular Nintendo" afterwards.
