The Archie/SatAM fandom was smaller, but it's pretty much the patient zero. Very little guidance from SEGA when the comic delved into edginess, drama, furry love triangles and politics, and the audience ate that shit up. So many online shipping wars and recolored OCs spawned from it (so many of Archie's OCs were exactly that, mostly Echidnas) that it bled into the rest of the Sonic fandom.
Game autism started with the changes of Adventure and the removal of the western canon. Some people really took the green eyes and Eggman thing personally. And it exploded even more after every single Sonic game was ported over to GameCube, introducing it to a new generation of autistic Nintendo kids
