The projector I'm looking at is a NEC XG-1352LC. It has 8" tubes and (theoretically) supports 2500x2000 resolution.

I've been doing a lot of reading at curtpal.me and have learned a lot in the last few days. The question of "Can a CRT projector do 4k?" actually still something that is up in the air. A few posters have mentioned doing a few experiments with it, but nothing I've found so far is concrete.

There seem to be a few limitations to be concerned with, and a few misconceptions some members of that board have. Most of the users there seem to be rather unsavvy when it comes to using a PC to serve as the video signal source. They mostly use Blu-Ray and DVD, as well as a host of expensive converter machines and add-in cards for their projectors. They mod their projectors to accept HDMI. Why? Is my immediate question since VGA is quite capable of resolving 1920x1080p and with with good quality cables interference should not be a concern. On top of all of this some of the members there of the older aged variety seem to be under the misconception new graphics cards do not have analog video output, which is simply false. Even the newest stuff still has versions of the card with analog out through the DVI-I port and a DB15 adapter.

Still, some users do have the knowledge of the PC side of things and have programmed their own modelines and have squeezed 2560x1600 out of their projectors. There is some debate as to whether or not they are actually resolving it due to the sharpness of the lens.

2880x2160i ? Might work, might not. It seems like the right person hasn't come along to try it yet.

Could.. could this become a thing? Remember it wasn't that recently that people started using production monitors to play their games in 240p RGB. On the off chance that 2160i actually works (and looks good) that could be one of the cheapest ways to get big-size 4k in your house. With the benefits of CRT to boot.
