I think one of the factors that go into this are tank controls. It feels like a nightmare when something just springs up, forcing you to retreat, but you can't due to wrestling with the controls in panic.

Same way you struggle trying to escape what's chasing you in a nightmare.

It doesn't take much effort to reuse a lot of same assets the previous games had. And even with that, you can tell the games are running EXTREMELY thin on their recipe. Sad fact - CoD has practically become the staple in which other FPS games try to run themselves off of, and all for the fact that "It's what makes money." anyone who tries to push a different formula gets shitcanned awfully fast.

At least in Halo, you had big giant areas, and nifty enemy AI, cool vehicle segments, good music. Still doesn't touch Marathon though.

OP, you might want to add func_msgboard as an active Q1 community. They are essentially level designers and release quality SP maps every now and then.
Also, Quaddicted is an amazing website that has a truckload of SP maps for Quake 1.
