My grandparents have the entire myst series on cd/dvd and I'm trying to figure out how to claim them on their steam with the product/cd keys. I can't find any keys in the boxes and jewel cases. Do the myst games even have keys I can use? Is there a key I can extract with software?

Anybody else sometimes feel depressed that you will never experience your favorite games for the first time again? That feeling of playing a game that you know will be a pleasant memory in the future, thinking "wow, this game is incredible".

For me, it's Myst and Riven. Nothing else has been able to produce the exact feeling these games gave me. Sitting at the computer with my brother as we tried to make out clues for the first time. Sometimes we would spend what felt like hours getting nowhere, but then finally making a breakthrough and progressing, and feeling like we were on a real adventure. Riven especially has immersion like nothing else.

Post your nostalgic stories and games.

Did anybody else feel creeped out playing Myst/Riven even though they aren't horror games?

Would you consider Myst style adventure games comfy?

If a game is listed as being operable on multiple OSs, is it really always better to go with the newest OS or sometimes is it better to stick with an older one? Most common example is something like "Windows 95/Windows 98"

Then I've got some games like Myst 2: Riven, which claim they are for either Win98 or Macintosh OS. How can you decide if it would be better played on Windows or Mac?

So let's be honest, this was only liked for its graphics and story right?

>literally almost every "puzzle" is just data entry

>Cyan considers their own puzzles to be "non-logical"
http://cyan.com/iOS_Riven/rivenhints/gc16.html

>most of the game is padded with back tracking unlike Myst

>story is told through wall of text journal entries up until the last 5% of the game

There's a reason the publisher had to pack it in with a strategy guide.

Does anyone actually not cheat (or hints) with point and click adventures?

I went through Myst I and III, Syberia I and II, and Machinarium without using any cheats.

Riven? Kings Quest? I feel like those games are nearly impossible to beat without looking up solutions.

Riven is the first that comes to mind. Ingeniously designed, detailed, unique, well thought-out. It's something that I think modern developers would struggle to recreate.

So we all agree that Riven is a masterpiece and a work of genius and art, right? Amazing setting, cool villian and puzzles that were both logical and made sense to be in the world. Plus the visuals still look beautiful to this day.
10/10 would stumble around aimlessly again.

Is there an easy fix to get this running on Win7 64 without freezing and crashing at seemingly arbitrary points? I've tried limiting it to a single core and setting the .exe to win98 compatibility mode

So i beat Myst a couple of days ago in 2 sittings with no help and i was blown away! Really cool game!
Now I'm at Riven and man this is a different beast, i was so confused but i think I'm a little bit less confused now.
1. How do i get on to the golden top thing? If i raise the bridge i cant get back and get ontop.
2. What the fuck does the room with all the animal stones mean?
3. Those "eyes" around the islands with different symbols, i can't seem to make any sense of them.

Any help / general discussion!

How many of you remember Riven? My dad got it for my birthday as a kid, when it came out. Being a stupid 5-year-old I didn't know what the fuck was going on, but one thing really stood out to me, even then: the artwork was beautiful. Music wasn't half bad, either.

Riven and Myst thread.

Hey /vr/, I played Riven a few months ago and really enjoyed the whole experience, such a complex and stimulating game.
I tried playing Exile but I couldn't really stand the new system.
Could you suggest a similar thought-provoking game?
