I was gonna try out the swap trick with a CD I burned, just for kicks.Tried it. It worked. Then the game froze for some reason. So without thinking I hit the reset button and the game booted up. It's been working fine ever since.
I bought it used ages ago so I guess the previous owner chipped it. Just never knew about it.
