color me surprised.
But nah, Super Butoden 2 and 3 are good fighting games with unique mechanics, I liked Butoden 2 even before watching the anime.

Butoden 1 sure, but what's clunky about Butoden 2 and 3? In fact, the dash mechanic alone makes it very swift and smooth. And that's why the split-screen isn't a gimmick, it's made to adapt to the dash mechanic, you need large stages in order for the dash to be useful (and it's why Shin Butoden failed, stages are really tiny).
Hyper Dimension is definitely great too, though.

use the turbo cheat for more speed, remember to use L and R to dash, don't waste the ki on super moves, use regular ki moves. The homing balls are the best, but not all characters have them.

And why wouldn't you use it? I don't think I ever played on default speed again ever since I learned the turbo cheat, like 20 years ago.

Butoden 2 and 3 have pretty good gameplay though, and I wouldn't call them "average" since there isn't any other fighting game with the same mechanics (split screen, dashing, etc).

Buyu Retsuden is great because of the big roster, but gameplay wise it's only slightly better than Super Butoden 1, and doesn't match Butoden 2 and 3.

Wat, Super Butoden 2, 3 and Hyper Dimension are leagues better than MK in terms of gameplay.
There's a secret turbo mode you can unlock on the Butoden games by the way.

I respect OP's opinion, as Hyper Dimension is really good, but the king of dbz games is still Butoden 2.

I can always play a few matches against the CPU on max difficulty and turbo speed.
Sometimes I lose notion of time and end up playing for over an hour straight.

DBZ Super Butouden 2

I only played the sanctuary game for Famicom back when I was a kid, and didn't enjoy it.
For some reason, Saint Seiya didn't got any good games, a shame because they could have made a great fighting game, or RPG.
The famicom game is divided into 2 different parts, an action-platformer part in between the houses, which were very short levels with basic design and controls, and the house battles themselves, which make for the RPG side of the game. Being a kid I didn't really understood what I was supposed to do during battles (they were command-based, but I believe you could dodge attacks if you timed some button combination or something, could be wrong). Still, kind of dull, but worth a look if you're a fan of Saint Seiya.

As for good games, DBZ Super Butoden 2 is still the best to me.

Mmmm no, that'd be the Sega Saturn.
And a lot of people will burn you for saying the Capcom and SNK ports are good and will probably try to argue the Genesis ports are better (when in reality none of them are accurate).

But I gotta say it has some of my favorite console-exclusive fighting games from 4th gen, you already mentioned them, Endless Duel is probably the best one. DBZ Hyped Dimension is fantastic, but my actual favorite DBZ game (ever, not just SNES ones) is Super Butoden 2. I still play this game to this day and love it, especially with turbo mode enabled. Luckily one of my buddies is also a huge fan and we both are pretty good at it.

Sailor Moon S/Super S are also really fun games.

Genesis has the Yu Yu Hakusho game by Treasure which is pretty awesome too, but after that I haven't come up any other great exclusive fighting games for the console, I'm sure there must be something else, maybe some JP-only games. DBZ Bu Yu Retsuden is pretty decent, better than Super Butoden 1 at least.
