I actually like the NES Renegade a lot. I'm not going to pretend it's a good game but I do enjoy it. I like the music and the environments like the bar in picrel and you can kind of work yourself into a rhythm with the combat and it becomes kind of enjoyable at that point. The SMS version is objectively better though.

I've always enjoyed Renegade for the NES. I'm not going to pretend it plays well and it has a fucking maze in the last level that can send you back to the start of the game but once you wrap your head around the mechanics it starts to be sort of fun. I also like a lot of the backgrounds and environments in the game. They trigger some odd quasi-nostalgic emotions from me and I don't know why. I think a lot of them qualify for what zoomers call "liminal spaces."
