Honestly if you're used to the modern GZDoom source port stuff, you should still try playing on a low 4:3 resolution with the original software renderer and mouselook turned off now and then if you haven't. It really does have a great charm to it, especially in more classically themed WADs.

It kinda sucks not having the OG 1990s connection to Doom a lot of people seem to have. I started playing around ~2007 (pic related was my first version for a short time actually) so I can't really connect with the chocolateDoom crowd but I really don't like the nuDoom series either.

On the subject of GBA ports, Doom on the GBA isn't the best way to play it, but its actually pretty solid experience and definitely the best port up to that point.
