No, smartphone adoption was actually incredibly slow in Japan. Pic related are some statistics about smartphone penetration in Japan compared to the US and other countries. It's weird, and not quite what you'd imagine. Japan has a lot of novel-looking technology that we see and imagine them to be some high-tech paradise, but actually in a lot of ways they're stuck in the past and very slow to adopt new technologies compared to Western countries.
