And EWJ2 on Saturn isn't as good as the SNES/MD versions because of fucked up controls, and the art direction is a bit hit or miss, although it's interesting to see if you've played the original first.

This is a contrarian opinion I can actually agree with.
I don't mind the variety or "gimmicky" levels. Regular EWJ gameplay and level design isn't that great anyway. I play Jim for the zany humor, sprite animation and music, not for the gameplay.
EWJ2 was more ambitious and had new mechanics. Some really shitty and frustrating levels but it's not like 1 didn't have them.
However, I think EWJ1 did atmosphere better. That level set in hell or whatever is amazing, nothing like that on 2 (well, puppy love on Saturn had a "hellish" background, but it's more like "hell's hot springs" looks kinda comfy, instead of 1's actual hell.

EWJ1 also has its gimmicks and honestly? I don't mind gimmicks in EWJ games because, let's be honest, gameplay in EWJ isn't the best run n gun, it's no Contra. Some run n' gun levels on EWJ1 aren't really that fun to me, in part due to the controls, in part due to the level design. It's a game thats fun to play because of the art direction, the humor, the music, not really because of the core gameplay mechanics or design, it's not bad either, but if EWJ didn't have all the things I mentioned, I probably wouldn't bother playing it.
And some gimmick levels on EWJ2 are pretty good, I love Lorenzo's Soil and Villi People. Puppy Love can also be fun, on the SNES/Genesis at least, the controls on Saturn make playing it a pain, too slippery, can't do precise small moves. The problem with Puppy Love was repeating it 3 times.
The isometric shmup level and the level where you need to inflate Jim's head as a balloon are the ones I liked the least on EWJ2, but overall I liked most of the game, actually more than EWJ1. The variety was a good thing.

SNES in terms of controls

Saturn in terms of graphics (although some might still find the SNES version more aesthetically pleasing)

I'll be a contrarian right off the bat and say EWJ2

Saturn only has EWJ2. And although it's technically the best version (great backgrounds, best music, etc), the SNES version is overall considered the best, the controls on the Saturn/PS1 versions are somewhat fucked as the port was not handled by the actual EWJ devs, but by another company.

I'm on the same boat.

Also agree with >>2188782 about the bullshit non-platforming levels. Although some of them are fine, like Lorenzo's Soil is an original kind of stage, although could have been done better. The salamander level is also awesome.
But then there's the bullshit air level with isometric view. It's not hard, just tedious.

I think I liked them about the same, EWJ2 is definitely a worthy sequel. Shame everything after that wasn't as good.

Played both SNES and Saturn versions of EWJ, I felt the SNES controls were a bit tighter (especially noticeable on the puppy levels). I also can't make the cows speak at different voice pitch by pressing L and R, that's very lame. At least it has more complex backgrounds and a redbook CD soundtrack, I guess.
