I get the feeling NEC's success with the PC Engine was a fluke. Both the console and the CD expansion came out at just the right time to catch the attention of consumers and developers.
Later in the PCE's lifespan however they would go full retard with hardware decisions like:
>the Supergrafx with it's whopping 5-7 game library
>Supergrafx required this bulky mess of an adapter to fit onto the interface unit (pic related)
>PC Engine Shuttle model which redesigned the expansion port, making it completely incompatible with any CD expansion
>PC Engine LT required an extremely rare adapter to fit any CD expansion
