Not quite video game related, but more vintage video signal related.

Any idea why a VCR would suddenly run into weird field mismatch/sync problems? The video almost looks like it's playing in 240p based on the test lines at the top of my PVM. At first I thought it was just a bad tape, but it's happening with everything I try. The VCR's own menu displays perfectly clear in 240p, something I can't remember if it did before.
It has auto tracking, and while adjusting the channel buttons on the front do affect the picture, it doesn't do anything to the sync issue.
I'm going to test out another VCR just to be sure, but does anyone have what the problem could be before I go tearing it apart and try fiddling with the heads?
