I studied jap games for a while because I was a big japanophile and anime, movies, books, and games changed a ton in the 90s.

What happened in japan in 3D shut down tons of devs, and very few were hanging on with handhelds, only the biggest names could adapt to 3D and make money. They actually liked anime cutscenes, and cd audio, voice tracks, portraits, cgi characters, etc, but full 3D was murder. Now, when higher resolution 3D came along in 2008 or so that fucked all the rest over, by the time we are at now very very few companies wish to keep up, and are still saying in simplistic models and environments because of insane cost, needs for a massive staff and tons of outsourcing, and lack of trained people.

Jap games suck because the money is so scares that they absolutely must cater to mid-wits to make a damn if it's not coomer gatcha cellphone bullshit (which is for midwit coomers too).
