Just got done playing through the Ys games for Pc Engine (besides 3). They feel like if zelda was created by someone who had only made shmups before (pretty fitting for the console) and now I absolutely love them. I thought the bump combat would suck but there's something innately satisfying about it once you get into the game's rhythm - I think the developer's even likened it to the feeling of satisfaction you get from the simple popping of bubble wrap. And while the bump combat is simple, it really shines during boss fights where timing, speed and pattern recognition are everything. All this in an incredible aesthetic package complete with cool lore, great visuals and 10/10 music. I really wish I found this series earlier as they scratch an itch I didn't know I had.
