What went right?

Never played any of them. How long does it take to get used to tank controls?

There isn't a good fanbase for anything, trust me.

For a newcomer to the series, which is the best version of Resident Evil 1 to start with, the PlayStation original, the director's cut, or REmake?

I'm trying to introduce my friend to the Resident Evil series
Should he start with the original release? or the REmake?
I've played both myself but I feel like he's missing out on what made resident evil great the dialogue and FMV's
but then again REmake is a better "game" and he's the type of person who never played them and boohoo's tank controls
We'll be playing them together as sort of a spooky season start.

1. Resident evil 1
has the best atmosphere/music/design of them all, its less action more horror, plus its the one game i had the most fun with.

2. resident evil 2
Still a fun game, although the focus is more on action with this one.

3. resident evil 3
I had to force myself to finish this. It seems to be dull and repetitive, and i had the feeling i did this a million times before. Decent game though.

Honorable mention goes out to code veronica and biohazard zero which are both much better than resi 3.

What is the best version of Resident Evil 1?

Guess I could describe it as "mystery" when I first played it back in 96 as a kid. Still hold that nostalgic feeling whenever I play it. The rest of the series feels like a dumb action movie.

No, seriously. With the one exception being 4 (which is also overrated but nowhere near as much as the older games), this entire series is objectively terrible. If you think otherwise you're just a kid/manchild who's easily frightened by jumpscares.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Is it just too obvious?

Surprisingly these games have mods for them, it's just unfortunate none of them are based of the console versions, and some of best mods are in WIP limbo.

Oh well at least Behind the Mask gets current updates pretty fast.

ITT: Retro games with artificial difficulty

One of my friends has been pestering me to play Resident Evil, and now that I'm nearly finished Cryostasis I might as well give it a shot.

Should I install the PC port, or just emulate the original Playstation version?

What's the first Resident Evil where directional controls are normal like today? I.e., "up" and "down" aren't the only ways to walk. "Left" and "Right" are not only used for turning.

NO ONE TOLD ME.

Gotta try that out and see how that plays. It's a Win95 game. Would god damn love a 9xBox right about now. Should I go through the trouble of installing Win95 in Dosbox?

Also, RE2 Sourceport plays mostly fine, but when a FMV plays, the screen will go fully black. I have to go out of and back into fullscreen mode to get image back. Also the text on the main menu looks... odd. Like it's scaled terribly.
