I've played the Famicom version and I liked it a LOT. The only real issue is how short it is, 4 hours.

Ys fan like to shit on the NES versions of those games but this version of Ys III, compared to videos of other versions I've seen online, genuinely seems to be the best.

>Ys III - Wanderers from Ys

After the events of Ys II the hero travels the world and stumbles on a region in need!
Lot's of changes compared to the previous titles: it is now a pure sidescroller like Faxanadu and the bump combat is gone. There is a world map but it is basically just a background menu. The game is more story oriented as well with a lot of cutscenes and dialogues, the protagonist breaks from his silence from the previous games.
There are no spells (magic was sealed at the end of II) but the Ring mechanic fills that purpose, with different effects such as increasing attack, defense, time stop, etc the ressource to use them is scarce.
Gameplay is very fast paced and the range of the sword is short, there are several moves like a downward thrust when landing from a jump, an upward thrust which wasn't very useful, and the ability to crawl and attack which extends the range of the sword (one of the most useful moves).
Interestingly the sword has "auto-fire" and continuously attacks when holding the button. Also, the closer the player is to an enemy and the higher the rate of fire becomes, which makes for an interesting risk/reward mechanic. There is no auto-fire when jumping however and landing hits while jumping requires precise timing.
There are a lot of bosses and most of them are fun to fight, although a few were push-overs. A bit of grinding is expected if you want to buy better equipment but it goes really fast, and even then I am sure the game could be completeled without any grinding as long as you learn the patterns.
6-7 locations to explore, all with great graphics and musics. The game is really short however and I completed it in less than 4 hours, grinding included. The max level is 12 which is half of what it was in I and II.
Combat could have been a little more refined, and I don't know how the other versions of the game compare, but overall I enjoyed this game a lot, recommended!
