If you've got a thief you should try stealing Gafgarion's sword, that way he can't use his sword techniques.

Essentially the rules to the universe in these games seem to be consistent as far as planet is concerned, themed differently per game.
This cosmology runs all the way through the Final Fantasy series, you can even see it in the flopped FF: Spirits Within movie, or even in FFXII's Revenant Wings.

So whats with FF4 & FF6? And now that I think about it, also FF5, 12 too if you want to blend some Matsuno.

Well in FFX there was some rather colorful and interesting necromancy going around, essentially Pyreflies are just components of the soul.
Certain people with a certain gift were able to make "Fayth", entities who continued to pray to the point that they basically became Faithful Superheroes with an extraordinary Spiritual/Elemental power.

Essentially through manipulation of some spiritual energy/magic, what have you, a being was able to transcend being a mundane human into an 11' foot tall blue ice goddess, a rabid fiery dog man, a lightning pony or even three ladies in bug suits.

Well this also happens in FF4, FF5 and FF6.
In FF4 The King of Baron, post-mortem, becomes Odin.
In FF5 the Wyvern is reborn into Phoenix
and in FF6 everytime one of the three Magic God(dess) cast a spell the fallout would literally turn you into some magical god beast.
