Single player is fundamentally boring and only good for practicing muscle memory. Fighting games vs humans is one of my favorite genres of all time, for all time. Fighting games vs AI is one of the most boring.

>but the game is so badly balanced that everyone ends up using the same 3 characters all the time

Frequent player of fighters both retro and modern here and this isn't true at all.

For myself, I strongly prefer SNK fighters to Capcom's but I think SF3 puts every SNK fighter before and after it to shame. XII and XIII might be close if the art style wasn't such ass.

I guess we have different interests. I just still like a lot of old games. If I had it I might consider booting it up to see how bad it was, but I can't imagine getting pissed about not being able to.

>I know all of this though it's still weird that even if being easy they still add occasional cheapness that doesn't actually increase the challenge that much.

Exactly, because fighters in versus mode can be one of the greatest genres ever, but in single player mode they're among the worst.

>>4525301
No, the contrast is fighting games where you need to have mastery over the controls and execution and then on top of that have to think strategically on your feet.

When every time I play the first three levels of Gradius, they're exactly the same? Where after I've played level 1 ten times I remember exactly when every enemy formation is going to show up? Yes, to me that becomes a chore.

That's not to say you have to agree, but to me personally yes. That's super boring. I will say though that what I look for in a game and how I judge it is based on how often I get to make an interesting decision. So by the time I know something well enough to make it through without being hit, there's little left of what I find interesting.

Again that's just me. I don't find perfecting my score nearly interesting enough to keep playing the same level over and over. But that's not to say I think someone who does shouldn't enjoy that.

>>4526715
Of course there is always a balance of skill and endurance in everything. It's when it's heavily weighted to endurance that I find it less interesting. Also I stand by my analogy. Someone trying to juggle 8 pins, fumbling through it once and then declaring they are an 8 pin juggler is absolutely not what I am talking about. I agree that person isn't really playing. But I am not, nor am I talking about people like that.

If you want to use that analogy then it would be someone who can at any time juggle 8 pins flawlessly for 20 seconds but maybe not more than that. But even that gets away from the point.

>we understand, it's nostalgia
You don't understand then. Well, maybe with Doom. I admit I threw it in because of it's popularity and long running appeal. I haven't personally played it since it was current.

I do still play King of Fighters '98 though and that is most certainly not nostalgia. Same when I pick up Tetris or Pacman or Space Harrier. Those are all just fun as fuck.

I'm much more of a King of Fighters fan, but that's a great gif :)

Interesting that you're sticking to your guns with this tactic of refusing to say anything of any value, or even on the subject while calling everyone around you a troll. It's almost like you're being disingenuous!

Another oldfag here and lover of 2D animations, I feel similar. There were some great games, but overall I see the PS/N64/Saturn era as a dark time when 3D was pushed for consoles but the hardware really couldn't do it justice.

Because for all the talk of it, it hardly seems to matter. I go back and forth playing King of Fighters emulated to play people online and hardware when my friends come over and we get to still use DC controllers. I notice almost no difference in timing and that's pretty important with fighters. Other people have no trouble beating Punch Out...

The way some people talk you'd expect input lag to make games unplayably gimped. It's just not the case.

I don't know about burned games, but I've been using the Utopia boot disk to play King of Fighters imports on my Dreamcast for over 15 years now with no issues at all.

Me and a friend once hijacked a projector at an art show because one of the guys who was supposed to be showing a video fucked up. Made everyone in the gallery watch us play KoF for half an hour while waiting for him to get his shit together. A solid third of the people there thought it was supposed to be an art performance. Good times.

I'm oldish and love new games now at least as much, probably more than I loved them in the 80's and 90's. I just love games and gaming.
