Nta but it's pointless to claim that games age, specially in the obtuse but ubiquitous "like wine" analogy. Aging implies changing, and the games themselves don't change. Audiences (and their standards, preferences and comfort zones) do.

Attributing to the game the responsibility for that rift in perception in its original context vs the current one is just another manifestation of the inability of consumer-minded modern audiences to deal with the implications of opinions and preferences. They want them to still be theirs, but to be outside of them: universal self-evident truths rather than an overlap of many variables that may apply to them and their mindsets, but not necessarily to others' (or to reality in general).

It's perfectly fine to credit an old game for enough foresight (or simple serendipity) to maintain a certain threshold of compatibility with subsequent changes in consumer sensibilities. But a game that fails to do so isn't necessarily worse for it; it may be simply more specifically attuned to "outdated" sensibilities, specially regarding difficulty, play patterns and general design philosophy that, at their time, may actually have been features.

nta but, in effect, you're bunching an exploit like reset-persistent emeralds with a literal cheat code like A+Start, so you're actually arguing that BOTH are cheats. Narrowing down the definition of cheating to exclude everything the developers allow -by intent or lack of intent- the player to do is a silly cop out.

It's perfectly fine to attach moral rules to your enjoyment of a toy, but for fuck's sake take responsibility for them yourself.

Impressive production values only marginally leveraged towards taking full advantage of the medium in a serious or bold way; plus, a thriving independent sub-industry where most of the actual innovation happens. So basically like any other mature entertainment industry.

>What are the top 10 games that are fun to play from 1980-2000?

It varies person to person just like games from any era. I recommend getting an emulator, trying games and thinking for yourself. Radical concepts for people in this age, but it's a skill that's well worth developing.

I hate to say it dude, your church elders really fucked you in the life advice department.

Also it looks like you built a collection because you wanted it to look impressive to other people. Instead of one building itself because you love games and keep buying them.

Frankly if you want friends, but only friends who will play retro games with you, you're a bit of a dick and it's no surprise you're having trouble.

Do you have any interests outside of old video games? Maybe look for a social life there and keep gaming as it's own hobby.

Alternately, if you find you don't actually enjoy a lot of your collection and aren't going to play them on your own, maybe think about selling a bunch of it. You're clearly in bad financial shape, having a collection that you don't really enjoy and that is potentially worth a decent chunk of money is a bit silly.

Not to turn this political, but doctor visits are super important and mental health is just as important. This is why you guys should be fighting for single payer healthcare. No one should be in your position just because you're low income. Your president has said in the past he believes in it, so hopefully he will do good.

You are super depressed. Even if you don't get medical attention, find someone else to talk to about your problems than fucking 4chan.

Get your shit together, anon. Your kids need you.

I'm actually more or less seriously responding all the time. And have never been subtle about the point that I am just mocking you and your ilk for bitching about how upset modern games make you.

That doesn't make my love of modern games (games of all eras really) any less real. But your pissing and moaning about how upset DLC makes you is funny to me.

Daily reminder that not everyone "old" here is either bitter or dislikes millenials and/or younger people in general playing old games. I'm all for everyone playing whatever kinds of games they like.

I care very much about the industry getting better. We just have very different opinions of what better is. All three points you repeat over are ridiculous to me.

>1. Behind an online Paywall
Again, running servers costs money If you want good reliable and well maintained online servers for games, it's natural it's going to cost something. And really, the price for it is minimal compared to games and hardware. Even with all that, gaming is one of the least expensive of all my hobbies.

And remember, that only matters at all if you want to play online games. Six of the top 10 games here >>3117630 are entirely or mostly single player. There are still tons of single player games that don't need online if that's not what you're interested in.

>2. Broken day 1 and needs patch
Patching is good. There are a lot of retro games that could have done with a patch. It's been this way with PC games for a long long time. I am willing to deal with a rough first week of release if in the end it leads to a better product, which I usually feel it does. Especially in competitive games like fighters.

>3. DLC/Season pass
DLC comes in three forms, all are potentially good and easily ignored when not.

Type 1: Free DLC in the form of extra content and quests is in a number of games. Monster Hunter is a great example of one that gets tons. (MH also has free online btw) Anyone has a problem with that is a fool.

Type 2: Smaller extras from cosmetic things like fancy hats to new characters in fighting games. All of this is easily ignored if you don't want it, but adds the option for people who do. With fighters is extra good because even if you don't buy extra DLC characters you can still play against them online. So it turns it into Type 1 free DLC.

Type 3: DLC used as expansion packs. It's a cheaper and more direct way to add content to games than in the days of full on expansion packs. I fully support DLC like that.
