There's a pretty clear good/canon ending with variations, then the others are mostly what-if or gag type endings. Without New Game+, it's unlikely you'll be able to beat the game early, meaning you're almost guaranteed to get some variation of the main ending without trying, so don't worry about it.

Chrono Trigger is extremely accessible.
It triggers "true jrpg fans", so you know it's actually a good game.

Nice collection. I still need to try DS version. I usually use Crono, Frog, and Marle.

Technically it's possible to beat Lavos even as soon as you reach the End of Time. With early equipment it's near impossible though, you have to grind a crazy amount. The only new option available in New Game+ is the Telepod at the fair, letting you fight Lavos solo. You get the same Developer's Room ending as you get from Ocean Palace Lavos though.

>I wasn't able to find hard evidence of being able to beat Lavos at the earliest possible point without "New Game+" -- someone undoubtedly has, I just couldn't find it --. So I decided to try myself. Specifically on SNES, beating Lavos after reaching the end of time, before returning to 1000AD. My rule was the title/save name for the chapter couldn't change from "End of Time" to "The Village of Magic". Thus I could grind in 65,000,000 BC to make it a bit faster. I did this via emulator, using turbo/fastforward but otherwise no assist/cheat/etc.

>After many hours of grinding to LVL 90 I finally did it (88:25 of game time, less realtime with fast-forward). Was able to get to the final form at about LVL 70, but the last form is a beast to do with the low level equipment. Grand Stone is an insta-wipe (chrono can occasionally survive if lucky+full HP) So I needed Lifeline via chrono+marle+robo. Magic damage wasn't as much of a problem as everyone had maxed Mdef at that level, but did still require pretty constant healing. Luminaire is a heavy hitter, but expensive: robo tackle was the MVP with level scaling dmg and MP efficiency -- didn't quite one-shot the left bit, but close enough to allow a one-two punch.

>Interestingly, this doesn't appear to have unlocked NewGame+, which is a bummer.
I saw a TAS do it too at a low 40s levels, but I'm guessing that's not possible normally without extreme luck

Why ask the question if you don't want the objective answer?
