Yeah, it is a mixture of things thematically and aesthetically

Notably with your typical kung fu tropes, there is the Chinese xianxia genre specifically, which is basically like wuxia that is more focused on the supernatural forces than realism. This influenced the movie Big Trouble in Little China which of course was an influence on Mortal Kombat, which further combines these influences with even more Western elements

Zoomers gonna zoom. Samurai Showdown was an anime style game, anime wasn't widely popular yet in America. Also, there wasn't a huge market of people who were actual weeaboos who jerked off over feudal Japanese history. People liked kung fu and ninja movies and the fantasy/action movie trope shit they were familiar with. It being "stereotypical" was the appeal, nobody cared about real history nor the Japanese fictionalized version of it, they wanted what was then the pop culture version of it, and MK delivered that and then some. Hell most people back then thought ninjas were Chinese and nobody knew what the fuck a "shuriken" was, it was a ninja star, get the picture?

I knew all about the 70s and 80s when I was like fuckin 15, I don't know how zoomers are so entirely ignorant about what society was like before they were born but it is so tiring.
