>let's port a game primarily about shooting Nazis and Hitler
>b-but we can't actually show Nazis and Hitler
Anon, it's completely fucking retarded and gay, censoring the Nazis out of Wolfenstein 3D defeats the point.

30 years of arcade style gnutzi blasting action, what a long ride.

Wolfenstein 3D doesn't have the most depth for a game of its kind, but there's a bit, and even just the hitscanning and movement functions drastically different from Doom's. The game gets pretty damn fast at times, and it's one of the few where using the mouse for moving and strafing actually makes a lot of sense.
I also love the colorful cartoony graphics and style, the gushing blood, the treasure gathering, the groovy music, the big bad bosses, the score counter, the chicken dinners, it's all just wonderful.

Get Psyched!

Is that so? Because I can think of a number of different points which argue otherwise.
>1. Distance between you and enemy is used to calculate chance of hitting as well as damage you deal to each other, so getting closer helps making sure you kill quicker, but it also means you get more hurt when shot, which is worth considering if you're seriously injured.
>2. Enemies also do not have perfect aim, you can hurriedly strafe out of the way to avoid shots.
>3. Some enemies are faster than others in movement or attack, some are more accurate than others, and some withstand and deal out more pain.
>4. The subgun attacks faster than the pistol and thus stuns more, interrupting enemy attacks more, the Gatling gun attacks even faster and thus stuns even more than that, and can be used to handle a group of enemies with ease (but also spends ammo much faster).
>5. You can spend a single bullet in an attempt to alert enemies if you suspect there's an ambush coming up in front of you, sometimes.
>6. Sound can propagate through some venues, but will not through others, so you can never fire a single shot at the start and just wait for the enemy to come to you, multiple ambushes can be about.
>7. The mutant enemy is a bastard because he doesn't make a sound when alerting, so he can easily sneak up on you and you need to be wary of this, always minding corners and cubbies in levels where you find him.
>8. The knife can be used to quietly kill unsuspecting lone enemies as to avoid alerting others, you can also sneak behind the back of patrolling enemies without them noticing you.
>9. You will hear enemies open and close doors throughout the level as they patrol or are looking for you.
>10. If you're under 10% health, you can drink from pools of blood to gain meager scraps of health.
Wolfenstein 3D isn't a highly complex game, but it's not without a logic to its design and not void of any depth.

Good to see some love for Episode 5. I don't really agree with his tendency to sit at chokepoints or his use of WASD (the game plays ideally on a mouse alone IMO). He doesn't move enough in a fight and because of that he ruins E6M6 for himself by kiting the entire map into one doorway.

Just wrapped up playing all of Wolf3D on Death Incarnate.
I'd rank the episodes overall as 5>3>4>6>1>2
Episode 5 is just really pleasant. Well-balanced maps that aren't too long or too hard, topped off with a decently threatening boss. 3 is almost as good, but E3M6 had a really shitty maze that drags it down. 4 is mostly good, but there were a couple parts with so many enemies that the engine couldn't even draw them all. 6 is a mix of interesting ideas with horrible sadistic designs. E6M1 and E6M3 used secret keys sort of like an early implementation of switches that open secrets elsewhere, but they're downright painful to play otherwise. E6M6 is the best level in the game by a long shot, and E6M8 is an intense final exam. Episode 1 is friendly and basic to the point of being unmemorable. Lacking a medium-strength enemy between guards and SS really hurts the combat dynamic. Mutants were a fucking mistake, though. To its credit, E2 does its best to compensate for how bullshit they are with generous secrets and extra lives. E2M6 was the only map where I almost ran out of lives, but E2M7 saved me with most of the map being a secret area loaded with treasure and lives. Still, mutants are just the worst and that's why E2 is at the bottom of the list.

Really, it's a pretty repetitive game, so if you're not the sort to play through it all, I'd say just play E5. It's got all the enemies and minimal bullshit in its designs. Everyone should play E6M6, though. That map was goddamn great. Every type of enemy attacking from every direction with a lot of interconnectivity in an age of mazes and linear corridors. Made it totally worth the slog through the episode's early maps.
