These games often get called pokemon clones but I feel they are very much their ownthing. But I'll mention them here as they are worth playing.
Azure dreams (PS1)

These two differ from eachother quite a bit. The PS1 version obviously looks better and sounds better, has waifus to collect and a fun town building and house renovation system.
the GBC version lacks the town building and waifu collecting but has at least twice as many floors of the tower to explore and a ton more monsters to collect that are not present in the PS1 version. But you really can't go wrong with wither version.
Next I'd like to mention jade cocoon also for PS1, it is much more a standard JRPG than pokemon is but it has a neat monster catching and fusing system and some great world building and story. I have to mention that It's very short, especially for a JRPG on the PS1
