IWD is simpler, more atmospheric, and combat/dungeon focused
you dont need the enhanced edition for IWD at all, but it does add a few *really* minor things, and yeah, the kits kinda break it

yes, druids are better
bard is great because of their last song (DO NOT pick a kit!)
no single-classed thieves (ftr/thief is A-OK)
make sure you have a gnome or halfling who can wear helmets, because they get the best one
your party is plenty good as is
