I like ECCO more than the sequel, and I think I've figured out why. It's because Tides of Time basically has no air ceilings. Which acted like safe houses. And it looked better going up for air instead of getting it from "currents" (or whatever it was).

Another thing is that the final alien setting wasn't as impressive as in the first. Though I really like the evolved dolphins and skytubes.

ANYWAYS, I still wonder how the third game would be like. Given how frightening Ecco1 got towards the end, and how interesting Ecco2 was with the future and machine worlds. If Ecco3 would have had anything to do with the Atlanteans, then it wouldn't be nothing short of impressive.

I'm serious.

You don't think like it fill you up with existential dread and deeply unsettle you, but it do.

That sounds more like something Nintendo would do, with its wholesome family goodness bullshit. Sega back then was just about getting awesome people together and letting them make awesome games. Ecco is a one-of-a-kind game, though. To this day, there's nothing really like it in terms of mood and atmosphere. So of course it's possible that a board room full of execs just didn't understand what this weird Hungarian guy was even going for with this, I mean, there's like a dolphin and space travel, what is this hippie gay bullshit? Throw in some of that Captain Planet nonsense in, the kids'll love it!

You literally compared something that was slapped together in the span of a few hours to artwork by Boris Vallejo. I want you to think about what you've done for a few seconds and let that sink in.

>Ecco (seriously? why does this piece of shit get so much praise?)

Because back in the 90s every game was a shmup, a lightgun game, a crappy sports title, a tetris clone, a text/point n click/dungeon crawler adventure game, or a platformer.
Ecco was NONE OF THE ABOVE. You did UNDERWATER PUZZLES and battled SHARKS, OTHER UNDERSEA HORRORS, and ALIENS, in the fucking OCEAN as a DOLPHIN, with music inspired by PINK FLOYD. You could also do flips in the air for no other reason than that it looked cool - or to jump over obstacles. It was just really, really fucking cool, plus it was very difficult. I didn't like it either, but I understand why others did: it was a delicacy, a cult title, among an ocean of early 90s shovelware.
And it had one of the sweetest cover art of the era.

The thing with most Megadrive games, is that when they were released, the standard of the time was a 8-colour NES platformer with slow and jerky scrolling, minimal backgrounds, and usually slow gameplay. Compared to that, the Megadrive was way more colourful, had multiple fully detailed (even heavily parallax)backgrounds, and super fast gameplay. At the time these things were completely unheard of and Sonic 1 made everyones jaws drop on the spot, despite Nintendo demoing Super Mario World in the next room. Even most SNES games didn't have a lot of all that action, but they made up for it in other ways (more colours, mode 7, FX chips).

The thing is that most of these games aged pretty badly, as a lot of them still had basic, NES style gameplay, just with higher fidelity. But there are some really nice timeless classics there, like Streets of Rage 2.
