Just how big is AKB48 over there?

It's incredible, on the F-Zero episode when Arino goes to the candy store and the old man (who must be around 70 years old) has a favorite AKB girl... just wow, everyone in Japan is into them, every fucking one.
Then the 2nd part of F-Zero when Takahashi and Arino go to the store and start trying to get that one girl's poster... they paid for all the other posters too I'm sure... they're totally nuts.

I know, Japan, etc... we have our good share of putrid shit in the west too, but I don't think we're as homogeneous as Japan when it come to social phenomenons like these.
