I was thinking of making a sprite based shooter with some real labor behind it. I can make some real quality pixel art. Something that rivals Ion Maiden. And I feel I can do some real good map design. I also have a good programmer on my side too.

My question is, "Could I get away with what Doom 1 got away with in the current market?" Could I release the first episode for free and then charge for the additional episodes (2-3)? Take into consideration that I want to release modtools as well.

Or would I just be shooting myself in the foot?
