I think they settled on Yoshi being a Yoshi - a distant relative of Koopas that appears to be a shelled dinosaurian dragon thing, but is removed enough from all of those things to be a unique creature in itself.
I always thought they were more like chameleons. That tongue doesn't lie.

Not a bad way to put it really, except Yoshis in general are more useful despite often having less character. Also Yoshis are biologically asexual and they're trying to do the same thing to the Toads by nuking all the females except Toadette. Don't necessarily think Smurfifying them was the smartest move but whatever, Nintendo gonna Nintendo.
