they fixed that in the PAL version of the game.

and I've been playing this recently and in my last attempt cleared the first five stages without dying, and made it to that final fucking jump in snakes. I love it because I make progress every time I try. I did beat Battletoads in battlemaniacs, though. That turbo tunnel is in my opinion a bit harder than the NES one. Snakes in battlemaniacs is plain evil when you first try it.
