You only have to get 70 Stars and dont have to get any other stupid collectable, just you, the game's tasks, and your nutsack standing between you and Final Bowser
Banjo Kazooie may have more charm and nicer graphics and worldbuilding, but what it doesn't have is that true sense of freedom across every level of the game. Super Mario 64 almost never tells you "no, you have to do it like this". There's nothing gating you. All movement options are right there for you to learn to master over the course of your dozens of playthroughs
Super Mario 64 is a masterpiece, the true 3D successor to the original Super Mario Bros in every way. Everything SMB did for 2D platformers, SM64 did for 3D platformers. STILL THE KING

If you prefer Sunshine to this masterpiece, you are part of the problem. I honestly and legitimately think you shouldn't be talking about retro games. Please go back.

how did it feel like playing this in 96?

Why are half the levels so terrible? It wouldn't be a problem if you didn't spend so much time in them but the platforming is at its worst in wet dry world, lethal lava land and painfully repetitive in stages like tall tall mountain and rainbow ride.
