I've wrestled with this conundrum myself, the best way to deal with data corruption and bit rot is to refresh your media storage every five years.

that's what I do, I backup everything to new hard drives and discs every five years.

and I'm thinking about ascribing Carbonite or crash plan for off-site mission-critical data.
