Playing Rondo for the first time right now, previously only played X.

Having a good time, but why was X so different in the first place? Some cutbacks were obviously necessary to accomodate the cartridge format, like the voice acting and animated cutscenes, but outside of those its not like Rondo is doing anything the SNES couldn't have handled. Outside of sharing its overall plot and graphics, its not really a port at all.

Anon OP and many other in this thread aren't even talking about completion percentages; They are talking about how just finishing their games could be needlessly frustrating; Like the Tribals in JFG >>9507336, Silver coins in DKR, DK64 demanind you play a no-hit run of DK Arcade just to see the final boss, Blast Corps, etc

Even in the context of the era they released in, a lot of Rare games had complete bullshit elements

Given that the GC was easy to develop for, had a very strong lineup of first party games, a respectable third party offering (if not quite on par with Xbox or PS2) was very affordable, and the Miniature disc format at 1.4 GB was more than enough to hold most games of the era (Very few games of the generation actually warranted using a full DVD for storage) I think its safe to say Nintendo had a PR problem.

It didn't really matter if it would have had a DVD player or if GTA had been on the console; In spite of all the good the hardware already had, it lagged behind the Xbox and PS2 in sales. Even if you did put GTA on there and give it a DVD player, I'm not confident it would have improved sales significantly. For whatever reason, the mainstream had little interest in the 'Cube.

And to give credit where its due, while I prefer Super Mario Bros 3 (How couldn't I?) SMW is a terrific game - I've been able to be more objective with its qualites with age - But it taught me a valuable lesson about the dangers of hype at an early age.

Absolutely phenomenal for rom hacks as well, and honestly I enjoy it more for those than the vanilla game - It hits that spot of surprise and not really knowing whats coming which the original game never really could for me when I first played it.

Every once in a while, I'll still thumb over the guide and look over the level maps, and for a brief moment, I'm eight years old again, and the biggest concern in the world is wondering what the yoshi berries and dragon coins do in this wondrous game I wish so badly to play.

>For some reason doubled down on the goo-goo ga-ga baby shit in an era when it was the last thing Nintendos image needed (Not that YI didn't have a child-friendly presentation but at least the fucking soundtrack didn't have Yoshis singing in bwah-bwah noises and a plot going on about how happy they all are while showering the game in hearts)
>Level structure makes no fucking sense and even if you play it in a way to get all the levels, the actual amount of content is laughable compared to not only its contemporaries but also the previous entry
>Retardedly easy

Yoshi Island mogs it so bad its not even funny and I have to assume its creation just ran out of time halfway through. Its not outright terrible but its probably one of the most jarring differences in quality between sequels Nintendo ever made, and I've honestly no clue why it turned out the way it did.

That one fag in this hidden town who will refuse to give you SPELL which you NEED in order to finish the game unless you have all the magic capacity upgrades. Fair enough, except he doesn't tell you this, he just rambles on about how powerful your magic needs to be before he'll teach you shit. Strange choice of words for a game where you literally can level up magic and this ISN'T the solution.

So you take this guy at face value and you grind out your magic to max level, only to find he still refuses to give you the spell you need.

So now, hours of grinding later and faced with no other possible meaning to his words, you settle on the only remaining possibility; Max out your magic capacity. Except you have literally no clue where the magic upgrades actually are and this asshole (And nobody else, for that matter) gives you no hints.

Maybe this shit could be reasonably deducted if they were always tucked away in caves, or in a suspiciously marked tile, so you'd know what to look for, kind of like the first one right outisde of Zeldas palace at the beginning of the game, right? Naaah, that'd be too easy - Lets stick one of these items NEEDED TO FINISH THE FUCKING GAME in a random ass tile on Maze Island that no player would ever have any reason to step on since its nowhere close to the palace on the island or the missing kids tile at the far end of it.

If this cryptic bullshit is the intended way, then /vr/ contrarians who defend this garbage can suck my balls, I'm looking it up and won't feel bad about it.

Why? What is the appeal? Actually playing the game is infinitely more satisfying.
