Well OP, ya got me. Played maybe 30% or 40%, but I don't think I've played half of these specific games. I do not see Umihara Kawase, Cotton 100%, or the Parodius games however.

Street Fighter II even

To be fair this is true of every console

I guess just stick with Super Mario All-Stars, that way you get the upgrades of SNES without the "downgrades" of World

Idk, I grew up with World but have been playing mostly 3 for the past year or so. I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses, though if you want the best of both worlds (pun not intended) I think All-Stars is the way to go

I'm sorry you feel that way OP. Personally I really like the SNES, though admittedly I haven't played every game on it. There are indeed some very good JP-exclusives like the Parodius games, Cotton 100%, Magical Pop'n, Doremi Fantasy, Umihara Kawase, the Go Go Ackman series, Sailor Moon games, Super V.G, and several others.

It was a "big deal" because nobody had ever seen anything like Mode 7 before. NES and Genesis couldn't do it and it was revolutionary new tech for the time. It may not look as cool as F-Zero X or GX, but without the og those sequels wouldn't exist anyway.

>>10893621
I would give the edge to F-Zero, even on the N64 it's just a cooler game.

Well if you think that's bad don't ever play SMB2J or the 2-hit Japanese version of SMB3. Especially without warp whistles...

I agree with this. If he likes MK8, at least let him play Mario Kart 64 or Diddy Kong Racing or Crash Team Racing or something. Castlevania is kind of more for adults, not to mention very challenging. I personally started with Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World as a kid. If you're going to give him a platformer, there are plenty of better games to choose from to start with, maybe something cute and kid-friendly like Kirby or Yoshi's Island or something. Sonic works too

You are confusing the US library with western-developed games. Mario, Yoshi, Mega Man, Street Fighter, Castlevania etc. all came out in North America too. We even got some stuff we normally wouldn't like Pocky and Rocky and Goemon games.

I might agree that those western-developed games were arguably better on Genesis though, especially ones that were on SEGA CD like Mickey Mania and Earthworm Jim.

They're maybe not as interesting to me now, but as a kid I always enjoyed Nintendo games, especially the Donkey Kong Country and Banjo games. They also kind of pioneered the handheld space for the most part and still do, which is still kind of new to me as well since I didn't have any handhelds growing up until the DS Phat. Anbernic, Miyoo, PowKiddy etc. wouldn't exist without them

Probably the Wii, though as an adult I tend to prefer SEGA, Sony, and NEC stuff in general. Nintendo should've jumped on CD-ROM's around the time of the SEGA CD and TurboGrafx-CD, or at the very least partnered with Sony instead of Phillips (lol). As a result we got the N64, which is still alright, but no where near as good as the Dreamcast, PS1, or (to some extent) the Saturn. I never hated Nintendo, but once they made the Wii things kind of started going downhill. The Wii U and 3DS were the first Nintendo systems I had no interest in getting what so ever, and by the time the Switch came I had already gone back to playing exclusively retro games. They still do cool stuff occasionally, like the NES Classic, SNES Classic, and the Game & Watch handhelds, but aside from that they're not really the same company anymore, sadly.

>Any childish miscomprehension about them being a kind of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory of video games was a mistake on your part. I was never that person.
What does this even mean?

I'm going to go with Mario on this one. Doom already came before Quake and is still somehow more popular and influential decades later. Alone in the Dark came before Resident Evil though RE is what really popularized the survival horror genre. Tomb Raider is an interesting one, it was definitely popular at the time and I guess it did in some way popularize the action-adventure genre, though it's hard to tell whether it had as big an impact as the other three (though the fact that OpenLara exists makes me feel it was still pretty important). Mario is really in a class of its own though

It was like my first video game along with DKC. Fantastic game and perfect for beginners. I prefer it over SMB3, mostly because I'm a scrub and that game is way too hard for me, but I also like the look and feel of it, the cozy soundtrack, using Yoshi's abilties, the cape feather, etc. Land 2 is the only game that comes close, I also slightly prefer it in some ways, but World is still great.

The rule change definitely affected things. Looking at the catalog a good percentage of it is just PS2 threads. And since my fourth gen thread has been pushed out I'll just bump this one for now. Even if I don't agree 100% with OP it would be nice to see more 16-bit goodness on this board

I tend to cap it at third gen, so NES, Master System, PC-98, etc. I guess I could give Atari a shot but it does feel kind of primitive to me (my first systems were SNES and Genesis).

Looking at the current catalog I'm starting to think you are right. Besides this thread there is the single Genesis thread full of people bashing the add-ons, everything else is just fifth and sixth gen discussion. Sad times

Hopefully there is some way to breathe new life into fourth gen discussion on /vr/. I hate to see it disappear completely, it is still probably my favorite time period too, both the games I grew up with and ones I'm discovering for the first time. Nintendo and SEGA really brought their A game in the late 80's/early 90's

>Why are Nintendo games discussed so much more than Playstation despite selling way less.
The very obvious answer is Nintendo came first. Atari, Nintendo, SEGA, and NEC all existed long before the PlayStation brand, so no matter how unsuccessful their consoles were (especially ones like Saturn and TG-16) they all came first, and in Nintendo's case they are still around.

Sure the PS1 is better and has more games than the N64, but there would be no PS1 without SNES and to some degree the NES and Genesis. So it stands to reason that N64 would also be very highly discussed, being that is from the same company that made the SNES to begin with, even if the PS1 is technically closer to that console design-wise.

It would be more fitting if he just did the controller mod and played a few MSU-1 games using SD2SNES or something. It's still a very impressive mod though, even if the disc tray looks a bit silly lol

Dragon Warrior is a weird pick. Tony Hawk kind of makes sense in the context of 2002 since it spawned a LOT of extreme sports games, though idk if I would put it in the Top 5 over stuff like Sonic or Castlevania. And I say this as a fan of the og THPS as it was one of my favorite PS1 games at the time

Anyone born post-2000 is not going to remember the 8-bit or 16-bit days, in many cases not even the 32-bit/64-bit days

Most of this can be easily Googled or found on Wikipedia, but a lot of it is kind of useless information. Some SNES games had special chips like Super FX and SA-1 that allowed them to do different things, but you don't need to know what processor the console is running just to enjoy the games. Same with any other console. If you are really interested though there is a lot of engineering and reverse engineering stuff you can look into for homebrew or rom hacks.
