/vr/ - Retro Games

Most people are right-handed and movement normally called for your dominant hand so most games used the arrow keys and jump/fire/whatever were usually some combination of the left shift, ctrl and alt keys.
Early mouse controlled games changed that up a bit and usually had your right hand on the mouse, and while game commands/hotkeys tended to be favor the left side of the keyboard they could really be anywhere on it depending on the game.
It wasn't until FPS games with mouselook that there was a consistent need for both hands to be mainly dedicated to movement. And it didn't happen all at once. For instance Doom's default mouse+keyboard configuration doesn't use WASD at all and has you push the mouse forward to run forward.
