>you look at your shelf, with physical representations of your games on display, helping you to decide what to play today
>you take the case and look at the back cover, understanding which would be the ideal peripheral to use with this interactive experience
>you open the case and review the video game manual to familiarise yourself with the games systems and controls
>you give the case a good sniff to remind you of great days gone by, lazy Sundays playing vidya when you had no cares in the world
>you remove the disc from the case and place it in your original Sega Saturn

>THIS IS COOL™

backups give you none of this and you don't appreciate the games.

Saturn is an esoteric console, and Nights was the central piece of it.
Most people's memories with the Saturn are hazy. I can definitely remember getting one back in the 90s, I remember playing NiGHTS and LOViNG it, but then there's a gap where I don't really remember much, almost as if those memories from the 90s were injected into my mind through dreams, and ultimately the Saturn materialized on the real world. I still have that Saturn, but I often think if it's real or not.
At any rate, I love it.

Nothing, the Saturn was a system from another planet, or another dimension.

He's not wrong. I got my Saturn back in 1996, but even I still feel the Saturn is like a hazy fever dream sometimes. I'm like "wait, the Saturn is REAL?" from time to time.
I feel it's a positive though, the system has something dreamy and mysterious surrounding it, it's a unique kind of feel I never felt with any other system.

This thread is for discussing the dreamy, surreal 5th gen console known as the Sega Saturn.
I turned it on yesterday, only to find out the battery has already ran its course (it showed me the date/hour screen), I changed it 3 years ago so I think it lasted more than average (have read many people say theirs only lasted 1 year). Anyway here's the weird thing: the saves are still working. I guess before it's completely dead, it deletes the internal clock first, then the saves? I already have all my saves backed up on the memory cartridge anyway so no loss for me, but was surprised.

Me too. I was also lucky enough to have a Saturn as well.

It really is. I'm surprised many people just found out about it recently.

The Sega Saturn feels like a fever dream that somehow manifested itself into reality.
I still feel weird thinking about the Saturn, like "oh right, it DOES exist!", and I got mine back in 1996/97.

The Saturn was a fever dream that somehow manifested itself in reality.
I'm glad I had one back then.
I feel bad for people who missed on playing NiGHTS in the mid 90s. It was quite the experience.

Is it just me or the Saturn has a kind of dreamy theme to it? Apart from the fact the mascot game of the Saturn is called Nights into Dreams (which seems to perfectly fit the console somehow), the whole Saturn mystique has an oniric quality to it.
What makes me think this is that I remember one day, this was 2002 or 2003, I was just sorting out stuff at my placard and found a bag and looked inside and it was my old Saturn I actually totally forgot I even had it. Finding it again felt a bit surreal, and the best thing is that it worked fine like, whatever many years its been stored (and I went through movings, so there was movement), the Saturn remained pristine.
I remember the day I got my Saturn, I remember the days I spent playing it, but in a way, when you're in a dream, certain things also seem real.
In a way I feel like the Saturn was a dream that manifested itself in reality.
