I think that more indepth arcade games could be more attractive, but they still don't really work on the grounds that with the money you pay to clear a game, you could save up for one you own. The big selling point was something you couldn't get at home, and once that had been breached, you just had the specific sort of game and the style of the time to attract people back.

Regarding how arcades could survive, I'm a big proponent of the pay-to-enter model. That's how all the big surviving arcades in my country work. You pay £10 or so and everything is on freeplay and they attract tons of people (or at least did before this whole mess started...)

For anyone up north here in the UK, I totally recommend a visit to one of the Arcade Club venues in Bury or Leeds once lockdown is over. I seriously hope they can stay afloat in the economic downturn.
