I kinda agree with this. The spirit of the movie in relation to the video game is very 2000s. Something like the Mario movie would have worked better in the 00s than it did in the early 90s. People just weren't expecting a gloomy, sort of gritty version of the Mario universe, they just wanted to see the whimsical world of the games embodied in a live action movie, not a cyberpunk reimagining.
Not sure if it would have been more accepted, but it would have seemed less weird to people.
