Does anyone know what might cause a sudden and uncorrectable Bowie distortion such as pic related?

My camera has introduced a small amount of barrel distortion making the top and bottom edges of the picture appear bowed but in reality they are dead straight. It is only the sides which are pinched toward the middle.

My first thought are that a capacitor may have failed somewhere in the deflection circuit due to lack of use or simply old age.

Any thoughts or theories are welcome. TIA.
