Back in the day when technology was limited, it was popular for RPG's to come with fold-out maps that help you explore the game. Here's the companion map that came with Ultima 4.

The most fun and immersive thing is to have a real notepad to write shit on while the game is running.

Plus, by the the time you're done you'll have an awesome-looking adventurer's journal.

Also, print out the map of Britannia. You'll need it. And don't be afraid to write down notes on that, too.

I just printed out a map from replacementdocs. And yes, it's basically mandatory. Also, a notepad for writing down clues.
