Tonight I did something I've wanted to do for a long time. I used a PC CRT monitor to it's fullest capabilities and displayed video on it in 2048x1536 without upscaling and in a very high bitrate.

I guess I got into CRTs almost 10 years ago now, and I spent a lot of time fiddling with them trying to get them to look just right. When I would get a new monitor and try to play higher resolution files on it the image always seemed dull or dim. I tried to fix this a dozen different ways.

But there's no need to fix. That's just the way old high-res monitors are. I always thought the contrast should be better than it is, but the contrast isn't really that great when you're doing this. Not even compared to good modern LED LCD monitors. It was amazing for the time of course.

The screen itself can't resolve the full resolution due to the nature of the shadow mask, but it's more about the thought here. I'd say the visible resolution isn't much better than 800 lines.

It's a little bittersweet, that now once I finally have the ability to get the absolute most out of my monitors they don't have as much of an appeal to me.

Of course, I'll always have them for /vr/, but I loved them for video too.
