what are the most demanding MAME titles these days that are actually playable? i have one of the new i7's shipping to me after not having a desktop for 10+ years, looking forward to letting it rip on some 3D systems

Why are arcade games so difficult to emulate? MAME is so bloated and difficult to get into, and it can't even run most of the 3D arcade games.

Anyone else here curate their MAME romsets? Instead of dumping a full set of crap or picking out like 5 games, actually going through the entire MAME library and picking stuff out? Latest version I have has 2001 games and 1045 if you don't count clones. All hand-picked. Also, I'm using Arcade, which removes 99% of the crap that's been added the past decade or so.

You are a retro gaming fraud if you can't name 5 arcade games, worth playing today, on MAME that aren't shmups. Seriously, you're a NES zelda t-shirt wearing poser if you can't do this.

I've got nothing against shmups. They're where vidya started. You can't make a game tighter than a shmup. There's nothing more thrilling than facing a boss for the first time.

But you can download a big pack-o shmups from /vg/ and enjoy the best of the genre with a couple clicks. What about all the other arcade games?

default mame has gotten a lot better. not only compatibility but it also shows what files a rom is missing when you click on it.

however they made major changes to the current romset recently so basically every well known rom site cant be used anymore.
