I really wish I could have, but I wasn't even born when it came out. Still enjoyed the hell out of it on MAME though.

They do not know what the fuck they are talking about. I was happy as a clown when my laser and twin bomb upgrades stayed after dying the first time. Huge deal coming from Gradius. And the level designs were totally made with the widescreen in mind. Not at all just a cheap attraction gimmick.
