That's an out of nowhere assumption, innit. It's Phantasy Star.

Sorcerian: The Cursed Ruins - Ismalian Queen - Sharp X1

This is a very rare one. It's from a third party expansion to a Falcom X1 game called Sorcerian. The entire soundtrack, done by Daisuke Takahashi, is incredible, but this is a fun one to introduce you to it. Check out all the Selected Sorcerian albums - they're amazing.

Popful Mail - Volcanic Zone - Sega CD

Popful Mail is a Falcom platformer with RPG elements, but it's got a great soundtrack. There are two Popful Mail games that are roughly the same, although they have some differences and the biggest is the soundtrack - here's my favorite song from the Sega CD version.

Popful Mail - Argazarl Castle - Super Famicom

And here's my favorite song from the Super Famicom version. Totally different sounds; great stuff, both soundtracks are worth listening to.

Zeliard - World of Fire - DOS

My favorite song from the DOS port of the platform RPG Zeliard, which originally came out for a whole host of Japanese PCs. Really catchy chorus.

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Eternal Love Song - God Song - PC Engine

Really driving battle theme from a PC Engine Macross game. Fun, cheesy Italo disco beat and redbook audio. Fun stuff.

I've got many more if anyone's interested. Just ask!

It wouldn't work. PS doesn't have well enough defined character classes for a Tactics spinoff. You could force such a game but it would be so full of new ideas that there'd be no Phantasy Star left in it. I'm sorry to say, as a PS phan, that this is a terrible idea.

Why is Rune in the front row? Are you trying to make the game harder for yourself or do you not know that the front position takes the most hits?

>need to do ... get the PS2 Ages remake
Never recommend anything to anyone ever again.

>I is boring.
YOU are boring! I just don't know how anyone could prefer the step-backwards clusterfuck that is 2 over the exploration orientated brilliant pure adventure that is PS1.

Friendly reminder to all interested in checking about Phantasy Star 1: you absolutley have to play the retranslation with FM sound. The terrible original release is just not acceptable in this day and age, we know better now.

>Are Phantasy Star games any good?
Yes.
>Are they connected storywise
Somewhat. There are large timeskips between games but the events of games affect future ones in a big way. 4 also has many refrences and nostalgia-fanservice.
>Are there any bad ones I should avoid
PS Gaiden on the Game Gear is fairly bad. For completionists only. 3 is easily the least important of the main 4, but it's not bad.

1 and 4 are the highlights and represent the very best of their respective eras of JRPG.

I don't know why I only just realised that the cover art is just a Burgerised version of this.

1 is charming and a really fun set of worlds to explore. If you plan to play it be sure to use the translation patch with FM sound, it makes the experience so much better. I'd go as far as to say that it's the best RPG of the 80's, beating out DQ3 and it's own sequel, PS2.
2 is a bit of a step down, the music and environments are much less memorable but it's got some cool ideas and genre innovations.
3 is all right. Cool ideas, but the execution could have been a lot better. Pretty standard RPG for the time. I wouldn't bother playing it unless you're a completionist or just really like RPGs from the period.
4 has the best storytelling method a non-voiced, non-FMV game could possibly have, fun characters, good music and worlds to explore. It's overall the best, though it's quite easy. The difficulty is on par with a 90's Final Fantasy game.

You could start with 4 if you want the cream of the crop right away or 1 if you're a bad enough dude to handle it. I would not recommend starting with 2.

Oh, there's also a bunch of text adventures for super completionists, still haven't done the Game Gear one myself, and PS Gaiden. The less said about Gaiden the better. At least 3 can be fun if you're an old fart like me, but Gaiden is just crap no matter how you look at it.

>this came out well before FF1,
PS1 and FF1 were actually released within two days of each other, with FF coming out first.
