Release order.
Starting with classic RE1 (1996), or it's REGULAR, non-Dual Shock "Director's Cut".

Both character campaigns, maybe some extra if you suck and get bad endings.

Continue this until you get to RE4. Then just drop the series.

Mediakite PC port with fan patches if you're willing to jump through hoops.
If not...
PS1 Director's Cut is the best and purest version of the game.

SourceNext PC port with fan patches if you're willing to jump through hoops.
If not...
PS1 DualShock edition is the purest version of the game.
Dreamcast has the most content, but everything is covered in a red tint.
GameCube is identical to the DualShock edition content-wise, but the aspect ratio is completely fucked.

SourceNext PC port with fan patches if you're willing to jump through hoops.
If not...
PS1, Dreamcast and GameCube are identical content-wise, but you get the aforementioned issues with the latter two ports (red tint, incorrect aspect ratio etc.)
