All of my childhood tapes still work, even the ones recorded on crappy broadcast RF. I only had 2 moldy tapes, and they were stored under heavy humidity.
Even if the plastic shell itself or the spindles break, it's possible to transfer the tape itself into another shell. If the tape tears or is cut, you can easily use adhesive tape and it will playback fine for the most part.

That's why VHS tapes are virtually indestructible and very robust, so there's no such thing as "getting worse as time goes on", unlike discs, that often get scratched.
